Melanie Sion, MD, FACS, is an Assistant Professor of Surgery (General, Trauma & Surgical Critical Care) at Yale School of Medicine and affiliated faculty at the Yale Institute for Global Health. She specializes in trauma surgery, emergency general surgery, and minimally invasive approaches. Her clinical practice focuses on providing care to underserved populations both domestically and internationally.
Dr. Sion graduated from Georgetown University School of Medicine and completed surgical training emphasizing global health equity. Her research interests include strengthening surgical systems in low-resource settings, particularly in Southern and East Africa, and addressing disparities in surgical access due to global poverty. She has conducted resource planning analyses in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and contributed to global surgical policy discussions.
Dr. Sion has received multiple awards including the Yale Institute for Global Health Spark Award (2022 and 2023). Her publications span pandemic response strategies, pancreatic necrosis management, and ethical surgical practices in resource-limited environments.
