Dr. Maija Cheung is an Assistant Professor in Surgery at Yale School of Medicine, specializing in Bariatric and Minimally Invasive Surgery. She serves as Associate Program Director for Clinical Skills in General Surgery and for the Bariatric and Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship. Her clinical focus includes hernia, foregut, and bariatric surgery with an emphasis on robotics integration. Dr. Cheung completed her MD at Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine and her residency/fellowship at Yale New Haven Hospital. She is a founding Global Surgery Research Fellow at Yale and has led global health initiatives in Uganda through KidsOR, focusing on pediatric surgical infrastructure and trauma care training.
Her research spans global surgical outcomes, health systems strengthening, and education programs in low-resource settings. Notable collaborations include developing pediatric surgical mortality risk calculators and cost-effectiveness analyses for operating room installations in Sub-Saharan Africa. Dr. Cheung has co-authored over 30 peer-reviewed publications and holds an ORCID ID: 0000-0002-9777-2378.
