Dr. Melanie Piper is a Teaching Associate in Digital Media at the School of Communication and Arts, The University of Queensland. Her research focuses on media and cultural studies, with a particular emphasis on celebrity personas, biographical narratives, and the intersection of digital media with cultural representation. She holds a PhD in Docucharacters: public persona as character in film, television, and fandom (2017) from the same institution.
Her work explores themes such as antiheroines in contemporary media, the ethical implications of post-scandal celebrity personas, and the role of comedy in political satire. Her book The Biopic and Beyond (2022) examines how celebrities are reimagined as characters in screen media. Piper’s publications span journals like Celebrity Studies, M/C Journal, and Persona Studies, reflecting her interdisciplinary approach to media analysis.
Her research interests also include digital memory, historical dramatization, and the cultural impact of recent events. She has contributed chapters to edited volumes on topics ranging from the Breaking Bad antiheroine Skyler White to the representation of Jackie Kennedy in film. Her work frequently bridges academic analysis with popular cultural phenomena, emphasizing the societal role of media narratives.
