Dr. Melanie Hoewer is an Assistant Professor at the School of Politics and International Relations, University College Dublin, where she has worked since 2012. Previously, she taught at the UCD School of Social Justice and the Irish School of Ecumenics, Trinity College Dublin, and contributed to EU-Daphne funded projects on Gender Violence and LGBT Rights, as well as organizations like Amnesty International and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation in Mexico and Colombia.

Melanie's research focuses on gender, peace and conflict, security, intersectionality, and Latin American politics. Her work explores how international frameworks like UNSCR 1325 address gender-based violence and ethno-national conflict, with case studies in Northern Ireland, Chiapas (Mexico), and Colombia. She has published extensively on identity transformation, conflict resolution, and policy implementation in post-conflict societies.
Her recent publications include analyses of gender equality in Ireland, resistance movements in Chiapas, and methodological approaches to studying intersectionality in conflict zones. She has secured grants from the Irish Research Council for projects like "Connecting with Hidden Voices of the Irish Revolution" and "Crossing Borders. Gender and Identity in Conflict and Peace Processes", which inform her comparative work on Chiapas and Northern Ireland. Melanie advises the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade on UNSCR 1325 Action Plans and serves as a Thesis Co-Supervisor for PhD candidates, with a focus on gender in peace and conflict and Latin American politics. Her teaching includes modules on Transitional Justice, Gender in War & Peace, and Latin American Politics, reflecting her interdisciplinary expertise in conflict transformation and gendered security.
