Dr. Andrew Thomson is a Senior Lecturer at Queen’s University Belfast’s School of History, Anthropology, Philosophy and Politics, and a Fellow at the Senator George J. Mitchell Institute for Global Peace, Security and Justice. He holds a PhD from the University of Kent and specializes in conflict analysis, peace studies, political violence, and US foreign policy, with a focus on pro-government militias, civil conflicts, and peace processes. His research examines militia dynamics in Colombia, US military interventions, and the development of peace indices in Northern Ireland. He also serves on the executive council of the Conflict Research Society and organized their 2022 annual conference at Queen’s.
Thomson teaches courses on security, terrorism, US foreign policy, and peace processes, directing the MA in Violence, Terrorism and Security. He has received a Teaching Award (2015) and a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (2012). His ongoing projects include the Northern Ireland Peace Index, funded by UKRI, and comparative studies on Colombia’s peace negotiations with paramilitary groups.
His research outputs span books such as Outsourced Empire (2018) and A Short History of the War on Terror (2025), peer-reviewed articles in Journal of Conflict Resolution and Studies in Conflict & Terrorism, and policy reports on peacebuilding strategies. He collaborates with organizations like the Institute for Economics and Peace and the Colombian NGO Umain.
Thomson supervises PhD students in conflict-related topics and has expertise in mediation, Spanish, and Latin American studies. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals focused on peace, justice, and strong institutions.
