Mel Jordan is a Professor of Art & the Public Sphere and Acting Director of the Centre for Postdigital Cultures at Coventry University. Their career spans 30 years in academia, including roles as Head of Contemporary Art Practice at the Royal College of Art (2014–2020) and Senior Lecturer at Loughborough University (2007–2013). They co-founded the Freee art collective (2004–2018) and the Partisan Social Club, focusing on art’s role in shaping public discourse and urban spaces.
Research interests center on public art’s impact on communities, social montage theory, and the role of art in city-making. They advocate for art as a tool for opinion formation in public spheres, blending urban theory with participatory practices. Over 17 PhD students have been supervised, with 12 in practice-based research. Key collaborations include projects with Dave Beech, Andy Hewitt, and institutions like the Royal Institute of Art (Stockholm) and Goldsmiths College.
Notable works include What Is To Be Done? (2025) exploring art’s role in rebuilding civic life and Introducing open montage (2024) on urban media performativity. They lead the Art & the Public Sphere journal and contribute to global dialogues on postdigital cultures and art’s political potential.
