Prof. Meira Polliack is Professor of Bible at Tel Aviv University. She holds a Ph.D. and M.Phil from Cambridge University and a B.A. from the Hebrew University. From 2012-2018, she served as one of the Principal Investigators of the Biblia Arabica: The Bible in Arabic among Jews, Christians and Muslims international research project.
Her research focuses on the intersection of Jewish and Islamic intellectual traditions during the medieval period, with special emphasis on Karaite Judaism and Arabic Bible translation. Her work spans biblical studies, linguistics, and medieval Jewish history, contributing significantly to our understanding of how Jewish communities engaged with the Bible in Arabic-speaking contexts.
Prof. Polliack has published extensively on medieval Jewish exegesis, particularly through her critical editions and translations of Yefet Ben Eli's commentaries. Her publications reveal a consistent focus on how Jewish scholars interpreted biblical texts within Islamic cultural frameworks, examining both linguistic features and theological implications across centuries of Jewish intellectual history.
Her scientific contributions include:
- The Karaite Tradition of Arabic Bible Translation (1997)
- Arabic and Judaeo-Arabic Manuscripts in the Cambridge Genizah Collections (2001)
- Karaite Judaism: A Guide to its History and Literary Sources (2003)
- Yefet Ben Eli's Commentary on Hosea (2009)
- Jewish Biblical Exegesis from Islamic Lands (2019)
- Yefet Ben Eli's Commentary on Zephaniah (2020)
Prof. Polliack's research has been instrumental in documenting the rich tradition of Arabic Bible translation within Karaite Judaism and broader Jewish communities in Islamic lands, bridging gaps between religious studies, linguistics, and medieval history.
