Mehreen Arshad serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics (Infectious Diseases) at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine and practices as an Attending Physician at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago since joining in 2018.
Education:
- MBBS from Aga Khan University, Pakistan (2006)
- Pediatrics Residency at Duke University (2011)
- Pediatric Infectious Diseases Fellowship at Duke University (2015)
Research Focus: Her work centers on bacterial pathogenesis mechanisms, antimicrobial resistance dynamics, and infant microbiome impacts from MDR colonization. Using protein structure-function analysis and animal models, her lab investigates uropathogenic E. coli virulence and develops pathogen-specific therapeutics while studying mother-infant transmission of resistant pathogens.
Publication Trends: Recent work (2024-2025) reveals emphasis on genomic analysis of resistant pathogens (Enterococcus faecium, Gram-negatives), pediatric infection dynamics in immunocompromised hosts, and global transmission patterns during international travel, demonstrating strong alignment with her NIH-funded antimicrobial resistance research program.
Awards:
- Fellow of Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society (2024)
- Fellow of American Academy of Pediatrics (2020)
Grants & Leadership: She directs an NIH-funded laboratory within the Host-Microbe Interaction (HMI3) research group at Stanley Manne Children’s Research Institute. Her leadership includes co-chairing the World Society for Pediatric Infectious Diseases Mentorship Taskforce and serving on the PIDS Research Committee.
Research Environment: Her work operates through the Center for Pathogen Genomics and Microbial Evolution at the Robert J. Havey, MD Institute for Global Health, leveraging collaborations across Northwestern's global health initiatives and Lurie Children's Hospital clinical infrastructure.
