معرفی
Joon Won Yoon is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and a member of the Host-Microbial interactions, Inflammation, Immunity (HMI3) group at the Stanley Manne Children’s Research Institute of Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital. His research focuses on host-microbe dynamics in pediatric respiratory diseases and translational therapeutic development.
His academic background includes:
- PhD in Molecular Biology from the University of Texas at Austin (1993)
- Postdoctoral Fellowship in Cancer Biology at Northwestern University and Children's Memorial Research Center (1998)
Dr. Yoon's primary research investigates how commensal Corynebacterium species inhibit pathogenic Streptococcus pneumoniae colonization in pediatric pneumonia through competitive adherence and secreted inhibitory factors. His work integrates microbiome analysis, molecular pathogenesis, and epithelial immunology to develop preventive therapeutics. Current projects examine respiratory microbiome dynamics, bacterial adhesion mechanisms, and host-pathogen interactions in children's health.
Recent publications reveal a strategic shift from pediatric oncology (GLI1 signaling in sarcomas) to respiratory microbiome research, with 2025 studies characterizing novel Corynebacterium species and their biosynthetic capabilities. This work bridges bacterial genomics, natural product discovery, and clinical translation for respiratory infection prevention.
As an active member of the HMI3 research group, Dr. Yoon collaborates across the Stanley Manne Children's Research Institute, Simpson Querrey Institute for Epigenetics, and Center for Reproductive Science, advancing interdisciplinary approaches to childhood infectious diseases.
