Ben Z Katz, MD is Professor of Pediatrics (Infectious Diseases) at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine, with clinical appointments at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago and Northwestern Memorial Hospital. His 45-year career spans viral pathophysiology research and pediatric infectious disease clinical practice.
Dr. Katz earned his MD from New York University (1980), completed Pediatrics residency at NYU Medical Center (1983), and Infectious Diseases fellowship at Yale University (1986), achieving board certification in Pediatric Infectious Diseases.
His research centers on viral pathogenesis in immunocompromised hosts, with Epstein-Barr virus as a primary focus. Current NIH-funded projects investigate post-EBV chronic fatigue syndrome and long COVID mechanisms. Clinically, he specializes in adenovirus, respiratory viruses (RSV/influenza), HIV, and chronic granulomatous disease.
Recent publications (2024-2025) reveal three key trends: 1) EBV's role in triggering chronic fatigue syndrome through immunopathological mechanisms, 2) multisystem symptom persistence in pediatric long COVID affecting gastrointestinal and emotional domains, and 3) surgical decision frameworks for non-tuberculous mycobacterial infections in children.
Dr. Katz has received exceptional teaching recognition including seven Faculty Excellence in Education awards from Feinberg (2007-2015) and four from Lurie Children's Hospital (2001-2005), plus Outstanding Teacher honors (2010) and society inductions (SPR 1992, IDSA 1991).
His research program is primarily NIH-funded with two major initiatives:
- Post-EBV Chronic Fatigue Syndrome pathophysiology
- Pediatric Long COVID symptomatology and management
Dr. Katz contributes to national efforts through the RECOVER Initiative (2022-2024), CDC committees, and NINDS subcommittees. He serves on scientific advisory boards for Horizon Pharma, GSK, and Moderna, and maintains affiliations with the Center for Human Immunobiology and Stanley Manne Children's Research Institute.
