Megan Benka-Coker is a Professor in the Department of Health Sciences at Gettysburg College. Her work focuses on the intersection of biological, environmental, social, and economic factors influencing population health, particularly in communities utilizing biomass for cooking.
- BA in Health Sciences and Globalization Studies, Gettysburg College (2009)
- MPH in Global Health with concentration in Community Development, Emory University's Rollins School of Public Health (2011)
- PhD in Environmental Health and Epidemiology, Colorado State University (2018)
Her research addresses household air pollution (HAP) from biomass burning, with fieldwork conducted in urban/refugee populations in Ethiopia and rural Honduras. She investigates ultrafine particulate exposure, its association with biomarkers like exhaled nitric oxide, and systemic inflammation. Current projects aim to reduce disease burdens through improved cookstoves and energy poverty interventions.
Dr. Benka-Coker teaches foundational and advanced courses in public health, including HS 120 Public Health, HS 322 Global Health, and HS 326 Epidemiology.
She is based in the Science Center, Room 148A, at Gettysburg College, Pennsylvania.
