Maxim S. Pchenitchnikov is a Professor and Chair of the Optical Condensed Matter Physics group at the University of Groningen’s Faculty of Science and Engineering. He holds a visiting professorship at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. His academic journey includes a PhD from Moscow State University (1987) and postdoctoral work in Groningen (1992), where he joined the faculty in 1996, initially in Chemistry before moving to Physics in 2006.
His research focuses on ultrafast phenomena in organic materials, particularly exciton and charge dynamics, molecular motors, and bio-inspired systems. Notable achievements include pioneering work on femtosecond spectroscopy and a Guinness World Record for measuring 4.5-femtosecond light flashes. He has organized major international conferences and secured grants like the €3.8M European ITN 'SEPOMO' (2016) and an NWO grant for self-assembly studies (2020).
His teaching spans undergraduate and graduate courses in physics and nanoscience, including 'Electricity and Magnetism II', 'Nanomaterials Optical Properties', and 'Academic Writing'.
