Max Murano is a Research Fellow at Cochrane Australia in the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine at Monash University. They contribute to research that aims to advance methods for research synthesis and the uptake of these methods, and develop practical, evidence-based approaches for enabling decision-makers to use research evidence.
Their extensive professional background includes over a decade's experience working in low- and middle-income settings to optimize the use of research evidence in policymaking and practice, particularly in maternal and neonatal health. Max has also developed strong project management skills through roles as Project Manager for multi-centre international health evidence projects and as Business Manager at Cochrane Australia.
Max has a particular interest in how health equity can and should be considered in the development of systematic reviews and clinical practice guidelines. Their research spans several key areas including:
- Health Equity in evidence synthesis
- Systematic reviews and meta-analysis methodology
- Clinical practice guideline development
- Translation of research into healthcare policy and practice
- Methods for evidence-to-decision frameworks
- Living evidence guidelines
Max has been actively contributing to the field through numerous projects and publications. Their work shows a strong focus on practical applications of evidence synthesis in real-world healthcare settings, particularly in response to urgent health challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic and in addressing health equity considerations in guideline development.
Max participates in the development and delivery of training programs for both Cochrane Australia and the Melbourne GRADE Centre, contributing to capacity building in evidence synthesis methods. They serve as Primary Chief Investigator or Chief Investigator on multiple active projects including NHMRC scoping reviews for Dietary Guidelines for older Australians and evidence mapping services for priority research questions.
