Max Mishler is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History at the University of Toronto. His work examines the transnational history of the United States, focusing on the intersections of slavery, abolition, incarceration, and capitalism within the Atlantic World.

Mishler's current research includes a book manuscript titled Civil Slavery: Punishment, Abolition, and the Origins of Mass Incarceration, which investigates the connections between slave emancipation and penal servitude. His work has received funding from the Social Science Research Council, the Council of Library Information Resources, and the McNeil Center for Early American Studies at the University of Pennsylvania.
Research Focus: Mishler's scholarship bridges Atlantic World history, critical carceral studies, and the economic and cultural dimensions of slavery and abolition. His projects emphasize public humanities engagement, particularly through educational initiatives for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated communities.
