Dr. Max Matherne is an Assistant Professor of History and Associate Editor of the Presidential Papers of Martin Van Buren at Cumberland University. He joined the university in 2021 and is affiliated with the Millard and JJ Oakley School of Humanities, Education, and the Arts. His research focuses on U.S. political cultures, early American republic dynamics, and the development of political patronage systems.

- B.A. in History from Grove City College
- Ph.D. in U.S. History from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville
His current research explores the ideological foundations of political patronage in the early American republic and its role in shaping the two-party system. He has received fellowships from the American Philosophical Society, the Dirksen Congressional Center, and the Society for U.S. Intellectual History. Dr. Matherne actively engages with academic communities, organizing panels at national conferences like SHEAR and S-USIH, and serves on conference committees. He teaches undergraduate courses in historical methods, American history, and European history. His documentary editing experience includes work with the Papers of Andrew Jackson since 2014.
