Maury Young Bruhn is an Assistant Professor of French at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). They hold a PhD from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and have taught at institutions including UNC-Chapel Hill, Vanderbilt University, and Université Paul Valéry in Montpellier, France. Their research focuses on Marcel Proust, cognitive literary studies, and the intersection of science fiction with literary traditions. Current projects include studies on vertigo in 19th-century French literature and Proust’s influence on contemporary science fiction. Bruhn’s book manuscript, Seeing Impossible Things: Proust at the Edge of the Reader’s Imagination, explores Proust’s challenge to conceptual categories of matter and time. They emphasize language learning’s role in fostering creativity and global perspectives. Courses taught include French language and literature, and they are affiliated with UAB’s Department of French.
