Maurice Sass is a Professor of Art History at Alanus University, serving as Deputy Head of the Department of Philosophical and Aesthetic Education and Head of Studium Generale. His academic career includes roles as Junior Professor (2019–2022) and Habilitation at the University of Hamburg (2022). He specializes in eco-sensitive art history, posthumanism, and the visual cultures of hunting. His research bridges art theory, gender studies, and environmental critiques.
Education: Magister in Art History from LMU Munich, Université de Caen, and University of Würzburg (2005–2011), with minors in Musicology and Philosophy. Earlier studies in Business Administration (2003–2005).
Research focuses on early modern art’s engagement with nature, hunting imagery, and interdisciplinary connections between art, science, and ecology. Recent projects include leadership roles in DFG-funded networks on hunting’s cultural history and premodern art ecologies.
Publications include monographs like Jagdgründe der Kunst (2024) and edited volumes on wildlife photography and naturalism. His articles explore Rubens’ ecological themes, artistic representations of hunting, and baroque astronomy-inspired art.
