Marieke von Bernstorff

Marieke von Bernstorff is a researcher and Head of Publications, Public Relations, and Reporting at the Bibliotheca Hertziana – Max Planck Institute for Art History. She studied history, art history, and political science in Bonn and Berlin after completing a Studium Generale program at the Leibniz Kolleg in Tübingen (1993/94).

Her research focuses on early modern art history, particularly 17th-century social and artistic transformations, Caravaggism, still life painting, and cross-cultural exchanges between Italy and Spain. She has contributed to projects like the DFG-funded bilingual edition of Giovan Pietro Bellori's Lives of the Modern Painters, Sculptors and Architects, including her 2022 critical edition of Bellori's Life of Domenichino.

In her administrative role, she manages publication series (e.g., Studien der Bibliotheca Hertziana, Quaderni della Bibliotheca Hertziana) and curates communication formats like the Hertziana Insights video series. She has been recognized for her work with the Hans Janssen Prize (2010) and received support from the Gerda Henkel Foundation during her doctoral studies.
