Maurice Ptito is a Professor at the School of Optometry, Université de Montréal, holding the Colonel Harland-Sanders Chair in Vision Science. His research focuses on visual system development, neuroplasticity, and sensory substitution in blind individuals. He leads projects funded by Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC).
Education: PhD in Experimental Neuropsychology from Université de Montréal; Doctor Medicinae (Dr. Med.) from University of Aarhus, Denmark. Postdoctoral training at Stanford University under Karl H. Pribram.
Research Interests:
- Visual system plasticity in congenital and acquired blindness
- Sensory substitution devices (e.g., Tongue Display Unit)
- Endocannabinoid system in visual pathways
- Neuroimaging (fMRI, DTI) to study brain reorganization
Awards: Knight of the National Order of Quebec (2013), Sir John William Dawson Medal (2001), Fellowships in Royal Society of Canada, American Academy of Optometry.
Grants & Advising: Over 20 funded projects; supervised 50+ students since 1991. Collaborates internationally, including with Danish Research Center for Magnetic Resonance.
