Mrs. Maude Henderson is an Adjunct Professor (2002-2014) at Lamar University's Department of Education. A dedicated educator, she earned a BS in Education (English/History, 1971) and an M.Ed. in Teaching Leadership (1977) from Lamar. Her career spans teaching at Odom and Marshall Middle School, focusing on adolescent development through bibliotherapy. She co-founded Lamar’s Reading Specialist program in the 1970s by mobilizing peers and negotiating with university leadership, establishing a legacy still impactful today.
Post-retirement, she taught remedial reading courses for underprepared students, leveraging campus resources to maintain discipline. A lifelong Lamar advocate, four of her five children and multiple grandchildren attended the university. Notable collaborations include working with the English Department to design certification pathways, and utilizing Lamar’s technological resources for her family’s healthcare needs.
Her contributions extend beyond academia: she supported Lamar’s football program revival in 2010 and embodies a family tradition of academic achievement, transforming her own high school scholarship experience into multi-generational educational success.
