Matthew I. Pyne is an Assistant Professor of Biology at Lamar University, specializing in aquatic ecology and climate change impacts. He holds a Ph.D. in Ecology from Colorado State University (2014), an M.S. in Integrative Biology (2006), and a B.S. in Wildlife and Range Resources (2003), both from Brigham Young University. His research focuses on understanding how aquatic communities respond to environmental changes, particularly climate shifts and human activities, using statistical modeling and experimental approaches.
Key research interests include:
- Aquatic organism distribution and environmental gradients
- Climate change effects on freshwater ecosystems
- Experimental manipulation of stream temperatures
- Predictive modeling of species distributions
- Brackish water species dynamics
Recent work includes surveys of American alligators along river corridors, temperature experiments on aquatic insects, and distribution modeling of Rangia clams and pitcher plants. Pyne teaches courses in Ecology, Limnology, and Aquatic Entomology at Lamar University.
His advising includes graduate student Jami Brown and multiple undergraduates engaged in field and lab projects. Research outputs emphasize interdisciplinary collaboration, with publications spanning ecological modeling, biodiversity informatics, and conservation strategies.
