Matthijs Bogaards is a Professor of Political Science at the Central European University (CEU), previously holding a full professorship at Jacobs University Bremen. He holds a PhD from the European University Institute and MAs from Leiden University. His research focuses on democratization, de-democratization, consociationalism, power sharing, gender and illiberalism, and political parties in divided societies. He has contributed extensively to understanding electoral systems, ethnic conflict management, and gendered dimensions of democratic backsliding in post-communist Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa.

His research interests include de- and re-democratization, consociational power-sharing, and gender equality under autocracy. He has authored/co-authored works on topics such as anti-gender politics in Hungary, electoral authoritarianism in Africa, and the EU's consociational legacy. Recent studies emphasize feminist institutionalism and the interplay between democracy and violence.
Matthijs has organized events like the Budapest Forum and the ConSec Seminar, exploring themes like counterterrorist legislation and power-sharing in Africa. He actively contributes to policy debates on democratic renewal and has blogs on European Parliament elections and autocracy.
