András Bozóki is a Professor in the Department of Political Science at the Central European University (CEU) in Vienna. His research focuses on democratization, de-democratization, political regimes, ideologies, and Central European politics, with a particular emphasis on the role of intellectuals in political transitions. He holds a Doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (DSc) and has held visiting positions at institutions like Columbia University, Smith College, and the European University Institute.
Bozóki’s career includes roles as president of the Hungarian Political Science Association (2003-2005), chairman of the Political Science Committee at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (2011-2017), and Hungary’s Minister of Culture (2005-2006). He is affiliated with CEU’s Democracy Institute and has authored/co-authored over 20 books, including Embedded Autocracy (2024) and Rolling Transition and the Role of Intellectuals (2022). His work has been published in seven languages in journals like Democratization and East European Politics.
His research explores authoritarianism in Hungary, the EU’s role in constraining hybrid regimes, and the legacy of communist successor parties. He has received prestigious awards including the István Bibó Prize (2009) and Ferenc Erdei Prize (1992). Bozóki’s interdisciplinary approach combines political theory, historical analysis, and institutional studies to address contemporary challenges in democratization and governance.
Key projects include the EUROSPHERE initiative on European public sphere diversity and the 8-volume series on Hungary’s 1989 Roundtable Talks. His editorial roles span journals like European Political Science and Baltic Worlds, reflecting his commitment to advancing political science discourse in Central and Eastern Europe.
