Andras Szalai

Andras Szalai is an Associate Professor at the Department of International Relations and European Studies, Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), and a Research Affiliate at the Democracy Institute (DI) at Central European University (CEU). He holds a PhD from CEU (2015) and master's degrees from Corvinus University of Budapest (2006) and CEU (2007). His research focuses on securitization theory, constructivist approaches to security, nuclear security, and European foreign policy. He is affiliated with CEU’s Center for European Neighborhood Studies (CENS), leading projects like BordEUr (2019–2022), which examines the securitization of migration and EU foreign policy. His work bridges security expertise’s influence on policymaking and the societal control mechanisms tied to migration politics. Notable publications include analyses of Hungary’s migration securitization and Cold War deterrence strategies. His research spans Eastern European populism, nuclear strategy, and EU policy frameworks.
