Andrea Krizsan is a Professor at the Central European University (CEU), holding dual appointments in the Department of Public Policy and the Department of Gender Studies. She serves as Lead Researcher for the Inequalities and Democracy Working Group at the CEU Democracy Institute and is a Senior Research Fellow there. Her work focuses on gender equality policy, democratic erosion, and resistance to policy backsliding in Central and Eastern Europe. Krizsan has a PhD in Political Science from CEU and has authored/co-authored influential books and articles on topics such as opposition to the Istanbul Convention, feminist responses to autocratization, and the intersection of gender and democracy.

Her research interests include gender-based violence, intersectionality, and the politics of equality policy in contexts of democratic decline. She has led projects such as the Co-Creating Inclusive Intersectional Democratic Spaces Across Europe (CCINDLE) and Supporting the Promotion of Equality in Research and Academia (SUPERA). Krizsan was awarded the inaugural Emma Goldman Award (2020) for her contributions to feminist studies in Europe. She also chairs the CEU Senate Equal Opportunity Committee, emphasizing institutional commitment to gender equality.
Recent work examines how right-wing movements weaponize gender to undermine democratic institutions, with a focus on the Istanbul Convention’s politicization. Krizsan’s publications bridge academic rigor and policy relevance, offering insights into civil society resilience and feminist strategies in autocratizing regimes.
