Andreas Schedler is a Senior Research Fellow at the CEU Democracy Institute and a Visiting Professor at CEU Vienna. He holds a PhD from the University of Vienna and previously served as a professor of political science at the Center for Economic Teaching and Research (CIDE) in Mexico City. His research focuses on democracy, democratization, authoritarianism, political polarization, and the erosion of democratic trust. Key areas include the analysis of electoral authoritarianism, democratic consolidation, and the intersections of violence and politics in Mexico.
Education: PhD in Political Science from the University of Vienna. Former academic roles include professorships at CIDE and CEU. Research projects include leading the De- and Re-Democratization Working Group and investigating polarization in the U.S. through surveys on democratic trust.
Research Interests: Explores comparative political dynamics, emphasizing democratic erosion, authoritarian governance, and conceptual frameworks for analyzing political trust and violence. His work bridges methodological innovation with substantive topics like electoral violence framing in Mexico and the theoretical underpinnings of democratic subversion.
Advising and Grants: Engaged in collaborative research projects such as the Politics of Polarization and ICMAN, focusing on citizen manipulation strategies in illiberal regimes. His work is supported through CEU platforms and international partnerships.
