Matthieu P. Raillard is an Associate Professor of Hispanic Studies at Lewis & Clark College, specializing in 18th and 19th century Spanish literature. Born in Algeria and raised in France, he holds a PhD from the University of Virginia (2004) alongside a BA from Colgate University (1998). His research explores Spanish Enlightenment literature, Romantic aesthetic theory, and transnational literary relations between France and Spain.
He has authored articles in prestigious journals including Dieciocho, Revista de estudios hispánicos, and Decimonónica, contributing to volumes like the Cambridge History of Spanish Literature. His work examines topics ranging from the sublime in Romanticism to the concept of Translatio imperii.
Prof. Raillard has held administrative roles such as Chair of the World Languages and Literatures Department (2017-2020) and Head of the Spanish Section. He currently serves on editorial boards for Dieciocho and other academic journals. His teaching spans all levels of language and literature instruction, including Honors Theses supervision.
Research interests include the Republic of Letters, literary silence/solitude, and comparative studies of French-Spanish cultural exchange. He is on sabbatical during Spring 2025.
