Matthias Pohlig is a Professor at the University of Münster where he headed the project 'Pious Princes: Differentiation and Dedifferentiation of Functional Systems and Actor Roles in the Confessional Age' within the Cluster of Excellence 'Religion and Politics' from 2013 to 2018.
His research examines the complex relationship between religious commitment and political authority during the early modern period. The 'Pious Princes' project specifically investigated how the roles of rulers as both political actors and religious figures evolved amid the confessional fragmentation of Reformation-era Europe, analyzing tensions between emergent functional differentiation of societal systems and countervailing tendencies toward dedifferentiation.
