Matthew Thiese, PhD, is a tenured Associate Professor in the Division of Occupational and Environmental Health at the University of Utah. He concurrently serves as Chief Operating Officer of the Rocky Mountain Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (RMCOEH) and Director of its Occupational Injury Prevention Program. His academic and administrative roles center on advancing occupational health through research, education, and community engagement.
Dr. Thiese's research spans occupational epidemiology, focusing on musculoskeletal disorders, motor vehicle crashes, infectious diseases (including COVID-19), and mental health in diverse worker populations. He investigates risk factors, preventive interventions, and evidence-based practices to enhance worker safety and well-being.
His recent scholarly output, including over 115 peer-reviewed articles, demonstrates a strong trend toward large-scale studies on vaccine effectiveness, impairment rating methodologies (AMA Guides), and mental health challenges in high-stress professions. This work often involves collaboration with first responders, healthcare workers, and transportation sectors.
As an active mentor, Dr. Thiese guides students in occupational health research. He currently contributes as a CDC expert on COVID-19 and co-investigator on a major national study of SARS-CoV-2 transmission and vaccine efficacy.
The RMCOEH, under his leadership, functions as a regional hub for occupational health research, training, and outreach, addressing critical worker safety issues through interdisciplinary teams and partnerships with industry and government agencies.
