Kurt Hegmann is a Professor and the Center Director of the Rocky Mountain Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (RMCOEH) at the University of Utah. He has held this role since 2003, overseeing significant expansions in academic programs—including PhD and master's degrees—and research initiatives. Under his leadership, RMCOEH's faculty and budget have substantially grown, alongside a tenfold increase in research output. His work primarily addresses occupational health challenges, with a focus on musculoskeletal disorders epidemiology, transportation safety, and injury care systems.
Dr. Hegmann's research spans:
- Musculoskeletal health (e.g., impairment guidelines for spine, limb, and occupational injuries).
- Public health interventions (e.g., COVID-19 vaccination efficacy and occupational safety protocols).
- Epidemiologic methods applied to chronic pain, cannabis therapeutics, and essential worker safety.
His recent publications (2024-2025) emphasize three themes:
- COVID-19 outcomes in children and essential workers.
- Advancements in musculoskeletal impairment evaluation guidelines.
- Occupational health interventions for firefighters and transport workers.
He leads multidisciplinary teams at RMCOEH, driving initiatives like the Clean Air Schools program and OSHA training. While no individual grants or students are detailed, his center has secured legislative funding tripling its operational scale.
