Matthew Scott is an Associate Professor and Adjunct Senior Lecturer at Lund University’s Department of Law, Faculty of Law. He is also a Researcher at the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, leading its Human Rights and the Environment thematic area. His roles include heading the LU Profile Area: Human Rights and contributing to the Asia-Pacific programme on human rights and sustainable development.
Education: PhD in Public International Law (Lund University, 2018) and MA in Social Anthropology of Development (SOAS, 1998). Professional experience includes immigration/asylum law practice before entering academia.
Research focuses on climate change, disasters, and human rights, particularly migration/displacement. Key areas include legal frameworks for disaster risk reduction, climate adaptation, and pandemic resilience. He has authored Climate Change, Disasters and the Refugee Convention (CUP 2020) and co-edited Climate Change, Disasters and Internal Displacement in Asia and the Pacific (Routledge 2021).
Recent articles explore Nordic approaches to climate mobility, Asia-Pacific displacement, and legal challenges in Europe. He collaborates internationally with organizations like the Asia Disaster Preparedness Center and Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency.
Teaching includes LLM courses on human rights and climate law, and lectures on disaster risk reduction at Lund’s Department of Risk Management and Societal Safety.
