Matthew P. Abdel, M.D., is a Professor of Orthopedics and Biomedical Engineering at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science in Rochester, Minnesota. He serves as Chair of the Division of Orthopedic Surgery Research and Vice Chair of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, with a joint appointment in the Division of Infectious Diseases. His clinical expertise spans complex revision total hip/knee arthroplasties, periprosthetic infections/fractures, and oncologic reconstructions.
- Education: M.D. (Honors in Research and AOA) from University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health; M.S. in Biomedical Sciences of Orthopedic Surgery from Mayo Clinic Graduate School.
Dr. Abdel's research focuses on genetic expression profiling of patients predisposed to arthrofibrosis, osteolysis, and periprosthetic infections, utilizing animal models and human trials. He has pioneered a novel arthrofibrosis animal model and identified SNPs linked to post-surgical complications.
His recent publications emphasize knee alignment in arthroplasty, periprosthetic infection management, and genetic markers for joint complications. Dr. Abdel has received numerous accolades, including the Lawrence Dorr Award (2018, 2019), Mark Coventry Award (2018), and the Andrew A. and Mary S. Sugg Professorship (2021).
