Matthew Notarian is an Associate Professor of Classics and Director of Study Abroad at Hiram College. He specializes in Roman archaeology, digital archaeology, and the social history of ancient Italy. His work integrates computational methods like GIS, photogrammetry, and network analysis to explore Roman urbanism, villas, and material culture.
Education: B.A. from University of Delaware; M.A. and Ph.D. from University at Buffalo.
Research focuses on Roman social history, digital methodologies, and epigraphy/numismatics. Recent studies include Pompeii’s urban networks and water distribution systems, and the application of 3D modeling in archaeological projects like the Upper Sabina Tiberina and Tharros Archaeological Research Project.
Awards include fellowships from the American Academy in Rome and Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa. He advocates for study abroad, leading programs to Greece and Italy, and employs innovative teaching methods such as VR, role-playing games, and historical simulations.
