Candace M. Rice is an Assistant Professor of Archaeology and the Ancient World and Classics at Brown University, affiliated with the Joukowsky Institute. Her research focuses on Mediterranean maritime trade and economic development during the Roman period, emphasizing how connectivity influenced the Roman economy through regional integration and localized specialization. She co-directs fieldwork in Croatia, Italy, and Türkiye, with a major focus on the Upper Sabina Tiberina Project at Vacone, Lazio. Rice holds a PhD in Archaeology from the University of Oxford, following an MPhil in Classical Archaeology and a BA from the University of Illinois.
Her research areas include Ancient Economy, Roman social history, and the archaeology of Roman villas. She explores themes such as maritime trade networks, urban port dynamics, and the socio-economic implications of infrastructure like harbors and roads. Recent projects integrate digital methods (e.g., 3D modeling of Vacone) and interdisciplinary approaches (e.g., paleoparasitology studies of Roman sewer systems).
Rice has received notable awards including the 2024 Rust Family Foundation Award for her work in Istria and the 2022 Salomon Award for medieval epidemiological research. She teaches courses on Roman archaeology, ancient economies, and Mediterranean domestic life. Her collaborative fieldwork and publications emphasize field methodology, material culture analysis, and the application of new technologies to archaeological interpretation.
