Henry Gruber is an Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina. His research focuses on the ancient Mediterranean world, particularly the late Roman economy and the transition from Classical to post-Classical eras. He holds a PhD from Harvard University and a BA from the University of Chicago. Gruber's work integrates material evidence from archaeological projects in Italy, Israel, and Spain, including his participation in the Falerii Novi Archaeological Project in Lazio, Italy.
His research interests include ancient pandemics (e.g., the Justinianic Plague), Silver Age Latin authors like Seneca and Petronius, and the social history of women in Late Antiquity through hagiography. His current book project, *Wars and Rumors of War: Archaeology, Violence, and the End of Roman Spain*, analyzes plundering violence during the fall of the Western Roman Empire. Gruber’s recent publications explore topics such as Vandal Balearics, Eastern Mediterranean trade networks, and the socio-economic impacts of ancient pandemics.
Gruber’s archaeological fieldwork and interdisciplinary approach bridge textual and material evidence, offering fresh insights into Late Antiquity. His work contributes to understanding how historical crises like pandemics and political upheavals shaped societal structures.
