Denise Cali is an Associate Professor of Instruction in the Department of History at the University of South Florida (College of Arts and Sciences). Her teaching focuses on Classical Archaeology, including undergraduate courses on Greek and Roman archaeology/civilization and graduate courses on Roman archaeology in North Africa. She emphasizes hands-on learning using archaeological collections (e.g., Farid Karam Lebanon Collection) and digital tools like 3D modeling via the Institute for Digital Exploration (IDEx). She directs USF’s Spring Break Study Abroad Program in Athens, offering courses on Mediterranean History and Archaeology.
Her research investigates urbanization and monumental landscapes in Roman-era Africa Proconsularis (Algeria/Tunisia/Libya), with deep expertise in Leptis Magna. She also studies iconography of power through Roman imperial villa mosaics in Sicily/Malta. As Senior Member of the Melita Civitas Romana excavation project in Malta, she employs innovative techniques: Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR), LiDAR, photogrammetry, and archaeometric analyses to document the Roman Domus of Rabat. This project aims to create a virtual excavation experience and preserve findings digitally.
No scientific awards or funded grants are explicitly mentioned in the text. Teaching and research activities are centrally focused on bridging traditional and digital archaeology methods.
