Davide Tanasi is a Professor in the Department of History and Director of the Institute for Digital Exploration (IDEx) at the University of South Florida, with an affiliate role in the Department of Anthropology. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Turin (2007). His research focuses on classical archaeology, digital archaeology, and the archaeology of the Mediterranean region, particularly Sicily and Malta. He leads projects such as the Mediterranean Diet Archaeology Project (MEDIAP) and the Melite Civitas Romana excavation in Malta.
Education: Ph.D. in Classical Archaeology from the University of Turino (2007).
Research interests include interdisciplinary approaches to ancient societies, archaeological science, and the application of 3D digital imaging for heritage preservation. He directs IDEx, a lab specializing in digital cultural heritage, and teaches courses on Greek and Roman material culture.
Recent research emphasizes the integration of scientific techniques (e.g., isotopic analysis, LiDAR) to study diet, trade, and cultural practices in antiquity. Projects like the Roman Domus of Rabat (Malta) and the Villa del Casale (Sicily) showcase his expertise in field archaeology and remote sensing.
His work bridges academic research with public outreach, including virtual museum projects and educational initiatives. He collaborates internationally on excavations and digital heritage preservation efforts.
