Research interests include migration patterns, citizenship dynamics, and socio-political resilience in antiquity. His recent work analyzes urban development in Sicily’s Hellenistic period and applies theoretical frameworks like 'community of practice' to archaeological interpretation. Souza teaches courses on Roman history, migration in the ancient Mediterranean, and citizenship studies.
He has co-authored excavation reports for the American Excavations at Morgantina (CAP projects) and contributes to peer-reviewed journals like the American Journal of Archaeology and Zeitschrift für Papyrologie und Epigraphik. His current projects explore Punic and Roman urbanism in Sicily, as well as legal and social dimensions of enslavement and redemption in classical antiquity.
