Alex Walthall is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Classics at the University of Texas at Austin. His research focuses on the material culture and socio-economic history of ancient Sicily, particularly during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. He earned a B.A. in Classics and Archaeology from the University of Virginia (2004) and a Ph.D. from Princeton University (2013). His work integrates archaeological, numismatic, and epigraphic evidence to explore political consolidation and economic development in eastern Sicily.
Walthall has been a key figure in the American excavations at Morgantina since 2003, serving as field director of the Contrada Agnese Project. He specializes in urban development between the 3rd and 1st centuries BCE, monumental storage architecture, and the intersection of numismatics with archaeological analysis. Collaborations include co-publishing the Central Shops at Morgantina and coins recovered from the site.
His research interests span Hellenistic monarchy, agricultural taxation, and the visual language of political power. He is preparing a book based on his dissertation, which examines grain taxation and territorial control in ancient Sicily.
Walthall’s fieldwork has refined chronologies of structures like the West Granary (3rd century BCE) and contributed to understanding economic networks through coin hoards. His interdisciplinary approach combines textual, material, and spatial evidence to reconstruct ancient socio-political dynamics.
