Matthew Johnson is Senior Lecturer in Yiddish at the Centre for Languages and Literature (SOL) at Lund University. He earned his Ph.D. in Germanic Studies from the University of Chicago in 2022 and taught at Ohio State University (2022-24). His research spans comparative literature and cultural history, focusing on Yiddish-, German-, and English-language works from the 18th century to the present, alongside interests in media studies, translation, gender, and Holocaust memory.

His recent publications highlight translingualism, Holocaust testimony, and digital preservation of Jewish cultural heritage. Johnson is currently finalizing his book Faltering Language: On German-Yiddish Literature, analyzing the literary relationship between German and Yiddish writers.

Grants and Collaborations
Research support includes grants from the Fulbright Program, YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, German Literature Archive Marbach, and the Center for Slavic Studies at OSU. He serves as a research consultant at the Fortunoff Video Archive for Holocaust Testimonies at Yale University and co-edits the peer-review section of In geveb: A Journal of Yiddish Studies.
