Anna Shternshis is the Al and Malka Green Professor of Yiddish and Diaspora Studies at the University of Toronto, directing the Anne Tanenbaum Centre for Jewish Studies. Her research focuses on Soviet and post-Soviet Jewish culture, oral history, and Holocaust memory. She authored Soviet and Kosher (2006) and When Sonia Met Boris (2017), and co-created the Grammy-nominated Yiddish Glory project, reviving WWII-era Yiddish songs. Shternshis has received awards including the Guggenheim Fellowship (2020) and the President’s Impact Award (2020). She teaches courses on Russian Jewish culture, Yiddish language, and diaspora studies, and lectures globally on Jewish cultural history. Her work bridges academic scholarship with public engagement, emphasizing marginalized voices and cultural preservation.
