Matthew Jefferies is a Professor of German History and German Studies at The University of Manchester. He holds an undergraduate degree from the University of Sussex and a D.Phil. from the University of Oxford. His research focuses on German history between 1870 and 1945, with a particular emphasis on art-politics intersections, urban architecture, lifestyle reforms, and environmental history. He has authored or edited influential works such as The Ashgate Research Companion to Imperial Germany (2015) and Hamburg: A Cultural and Literary History (2010). Jefferies has supervised six doctoral students, including notable scholars like Helen Vahramian and Sven de Roode. His awards include fellowships from the FVS Foundation and Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. His recent work explores popular photobooks in 20th-century Germany and the cultural legacies of Imperial Germany.
Jefferies has held visiting appointments at institutions like the Northern Institute of Technology Hamburg-Harburg and the Art Institute of Chicago. He contributes to academic societies such as the German History Society and German Studies Association. His teaching innovations in German History courses have been widely praised. His research outputs span monographs, edited volumes, and peer-reviewed articles analyzing topics like political iconography, cultural transfers, and the intersections of art and nationalism.
