Dr. Paddy McNally is a Senior Lecturer in History and Politics at the University of Worcester, affiliated with the Department of History, Politics and Sociology. His expertise spans Irish and British history from 1688 to 1848, German history from 1870 to 1945, and the history of political thought. He holds a PhD from Queen's University Belfast (QUB) titled 'Patronage and Politics in Ireland, 1714–1727' (1993). Currently, he is writing From the Boyne to the Famine. A thematic history of Ireland, 1690–1848, to be published by Routledge.
His teaching modules focus on Irish history (1690–1848), German history (1870–1945), and Nationalism. He has supervised three postgraduate students to completion, including two PhD and one MPhil, and is currently advising three PhD candidates. Additionally, he has served as an internal examiner for three PhD theses and an external examiner for a European Doctorate at the University of La Coruña, Spain.
McNally’s research emphasizes the history of patriotism and nationalism in Ireland, with notable publications including the book Parties, Patriots and Undertakers. Parliamentary politics in early Hanoverian Ireland and numerous articles on eighteenth-century Irish history. His work bridges thematic and chronological analysis, reflecting a commitment to interdisciplinary historical inquiry.
