Frank Biess is a Professor of Modern European History at the University of California, San Diego, specializing in 20th-century Germany, particularly post-1945 societies. He holds academic affiliations within the Department of History in the College of Arts and Humanities. Biess earned his PhD from Brown University (2000) after studies at the Universities of Marburg and Tübingen, and completed postgraduate work at Washington University in St. Louis. His research explores postwar emotional cultures, Cold War anxieties, and German colonial legacies, with a current focus on fear in West Germany and Weimar as a post-colonial state.
