Emma Kuby is an Associate Professor of History at the University of Wisconsin–Madison specializing in modern France, colonialism, and post-conflict societies. Her research examines the intersection of Holocaust memory, decolonization, and human rights activism during the Cold War era.
She holds a Ph.D. and M.A. from Cornell University and a B.A. from Brown University. Her award-winning book Political Survivors explores resistance movements against concentration camps after 1945.
Research Focus: Dr. Kuby investigates how violence and memory shaped transnational activism, with current projects on Jewish American expatriates in postwar France. Her work bridges intellectual history, gender studies, and colonial legacies.
Publications: Her scholarship consistently engages with themes of trauma, justice, and the limits of universal human rights frameworks in contexts ranging from French Algeria to Stalinist antisemitism.
