Jonathan D. Huener is a Professor of History and Director of Holocaust Studies at the University of Vermont. He joined the faculty in 1996 and holds the Leonard and Carolyn Miller Distinguished Professorship in Holocaust Studies. He is affiliated with the Carolyn and Leonard Miller Center for Holocaust Studies at UVM. His research focuses on German-occupied Poland during WWII, public memory in postwar Germany and Poland, Polish-Jewish relations, and Auschwitz. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1998.
His teaching includes courses on Holocaust history, German history, Polish history, and 19th- and 20th-century Europe. His publications span monographs and edited volumes addressing Nazi Germany’s impact on occupied territories, medical ethics under National Socialism, and postwar commemoration.
- Recent publications include The Polish Catholic Church under German Occupation, 1939-1945 (2021) and Auschwitz, Poland, and the Politics of Commemoration (2003), which won the 2004 Orbis Books Prize in Polish Studies.
His research bridges historical analysis with contemporary memory studies, emphasizing transnational dimensions of Holocaust history and postwar reconciliation. He is currently on leave for the fall 2024 semester.
