She holds a PhD from Princeton University’s Music Department and specializes in Polish music, particularly the intersection of music with national identity, Holocaust memory, and resistance. Her research focuses on songs from Nazi concentration camps (e.g., Sachsenhausen, Auschwitz-Birkenau), Chopin’s legacy, and postwar Polish film music.
Her work includes annotated CDs like Ballads and Broadsides: Songs from Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp (with Bret Werb) and English subtitles for films like Zakazane Piosenki. She has been interviewed by France Culture, Le Monde, and BBC podcasts. Awards include the Aquila Polonica Prize (2023), Pew Center Grant (2015), and NEH/Fulbright fellowships.
Milewski’s current book project examines music-making in Sachsenhausen, Buchenwald, and Auschwitz-Birkenau. She collaborates with scholars across disciplines, such as theater scholar Allen Kuharski for Chopin Without Piano performances. Her research bridges musicology, history, and cultural studies, emphasizing marginalized voices in oppressive contexts.
