Matthew Hindman is an Associate Professor at the School of Media and Public Affairs. He specializes in Internet politics, political communication, and the political economy of digital media. Previously, he was an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Arizona State University and a nonresident Faculty Associate at Harvard's Berkman Center for Internet and Society.
His research critically examines the intersection of technology and democracy, including the impact of search engines, social media, and digital monopolies on political discourse. His seminal book, *The Myth of Digital Democracy* (2009), won the Goldsmith Book Prize and the Donald McGannon Award. It challenges assumptions about the democratizing potential of the Internet, revealing how online political discourse remains concentrated among elites.
Recent work explores disinformation, algorithmic personalization, and the global political economy of digital platforms. His articles analyze topics like Russian propaganda on social media, visual misinformation, and the role of YouTube in political communication.
Hindman has presented at leading universities including Harvard, Yale, and Stanford, and his work has influenced FCC policy discussions and media coverage via NPR and *The New York Times*. He holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from Princeton University (2005).
