Dr Mona Elswah is a Research Fellow affiliated with the Oxford Internet Institute (OII) and a Project Fellow at the Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT), focusing on content moderation in Global South contexts. She holds a PhD from the OII (2023), where her thesis examined digital repression’s impact on social movements’ tactics in Syria and Tunisia. She concurrently teaches at Cairo University’s Faculty of Mass Communication and previously held roles at Harvard’s Carr Center. Her research interests include disinformation, political communication, and platform governance in non-Western contexts.

Research Interests: Mona’s work bridges digital media, online activism, and internet governance. Her analysis often highlights how state-backed media and computational propaganda shape public discourse.
Key Contributions: Mona has published on topics like RT’s anti-Western narratives, religious misinformation during the pandemic, and state media’s role in global health crises. Her work appears in outlets like The Atlantic and Wired, and she actively participates in academic conferences.
