Matthew H. Sazinsky is a Professor of Chemistry at Pomona College, where he has served since 2007. His research integrates X-ray crystallography and biochemical techniques to investigate protein structure and function, with a focus on metalloenzymes and their roles in bacterial metabolism.
- Education: Ph.D. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, B.S. from Haverford College
His research spans three primary themes: (1) identifying determinants of metalloenzyme activity, (2) re-engineering proteins for novel functions, and (3) elucidating biochemical processes in pathogenic bacteria. Recent work explores NADH-dependent enzymes, FAD-transfer reactions, and sulfur respiration in Shewanella and Pyrococcus species.
Publications reveal trends in metalloprotein structure-function relationships, redox enzyme mechanisms, and biometal interactions in disease contexts like diabetes. Collaborative projects often involve interdisciplinary approaches to enzyme engineering and bacterial physiology.
- Scientific Awards:
- Wig Distinguished Professorship Award for Excellence in Teaching (2010)
- Camille and Henry Dreyfus Faculty Start-Up Award (2007)
Dr. Sazinsky has secured competitive grants and mentorship accolades, emphasizing hands-on undergraduate training in structural biology and biochemistry. His lab provides students with opportunities for structural and biochemical characterization of protein targets, fostering early-career research development.
